Hi web-viewer sweeties! I’m subscriber gating a few more posts a month. The book pages will remain open to the public tho! xoxo
With the pneumonia’d death of Father in our rearview, it is time to continue our Little Womening.
If you’re curious about how the girls will deal with the fallout of their father’s passage, continue to be curious! It makes more sense - imo - to wait to address it when Father Stuff becomes more of a going concern. Anyway!
CHAPTER 2
“A Merry Christmas” takes place over the course of Christmas Day, the day after the previous chapter. The girls wake up on Christmas morning to find copies of, what else, The Pilgrim’s Progress under each of their pillows. Marmee comes to greet them, and, true to their word, our gals spent most of their coins on presents for her.
Looking over their Christmas breakfast, Marmee asks the girls if they would be willing to give it to a poor German family in town, the Hummels. The girls agree, and help Marmee and Hannah with setting up food at the Hummels.
The rest of the chapter is devoted to the Christmas play hinted at in the last chapter. A bunch of unnamed galpals of the sisters come over to watch the show in their collective bedroom. MUCH of the chapter is this play.

In the text, Miss Pugh is 12 years old here.
After the show is over, the girls come downstairs to discover a luxurious Christmas supper has been laid out before them. They speculate as to who could have sent it.
Marmee confirms the supper was sent by Old Mr. Laurence next door because he was proud of the girls for donating their breakfast. His grandson Theodore Laurence (nee Laurie) was the one to deliver it. Jo and the gals resolve to befriend Laurie.
